The Mission
The purpose of the Evening of Elegance scholarship program is to foster in students of color an increased interest in higher education, specifically, at the college undergraduate level. This will encourage increased participation in various professions throughout the community that require college degrees. Ultimately, we hope these students will use their educations and their college experiences to be of greater service to communities across the nation.
The History
The Evening of Elegance was started years ago by members of Fresno State's Black Faculty and Staff Association. In an effort to support and encourage African-American students to continue their college educations, the group raised money to provide scholarships to current Fresno State students.
The local community, Fresno State faculty and staff, and students came together each December for an evening of fine food, entertainment, and dancing. The students were recognized and awarded their scholarships at the banquet.

Paying It Forward
Evening of Elegance Fresno was the project of Fresno State alum, Ozeme J. Bonnette. As a four-time recipient of Evening of Elegance scholarships during her years at Fresno State, she was disappointed to learn that it was discontinued. As an expression of her gratitude for the impact that the event had on her education, she wanted to "pay it forward." She aligned with Fresno State professor, Dr. James E. Walton and Fresno State alum Marvita Gowdy, and was dedicated to bringing the event back as an additional commemoration of Fresno State's 2010 Centennial Celebration. After hosting five banquets from 2010-2014, Evening of Elegance Fresno awarded over $20,000 in scholarships to dozens of Fresno State students of color.
